Small actionable tips to reduce the waste of your kitchen!
Tips
Start buying food in bulk/refill form like oats, dry ingredients, or pasta. Although this won’t cover every food, it can save so much waste!
Be aware of your impact while shopping. Don’t buy a pack of individually packed foods when you could buy the “bulk” item.
Grow a garden: think of most used herbs/fruits/veggies in your kitchen and see if growing these yourself would reduce waste/be more convenient (Tip: regrowing food scraps is such a easy way to reduce waste, save money, and is super convenient)
Buy produce from places that save “ugly” produce
Bring a list to the store with you to prioritize what you actually need
Along with your reusable straw, bring a reusable cup if you are going somewhere to get a drink like a coffee shop, boba, etc. (drinking on tap at a bar is a good option too :) You can also bring a reusable box to a restaurant for bringing leftovers home (saves money and food.)
Get creative with food scraps and leftovers! Regrow, freeze for veggie stock, use food from one meal to create another, etc. Google is your best friend; there are seriously so many tips online for food scraps.
Shop local at your farmers market! This is an amazing schedule to get in each week and a great way to support your community and have delicious produce and other food for the week. Local farmers will usually grow what is in season which is a much better way to eat.
Going vegetarian or vegan is such an amazing decision! But, you don’t have to be vegetarian or vegan to make vegetarian or vegan choices! Minimizing meat and dairy products is a great step. Same with other animals, especially when that animal is endangered or being sourced unethically. This is something to do research on!
Eat what you have! This is so crucial. We are used to having any and every food accessible to us at all times. And while we can and should continue to enjoy our favorite foods, let's do so intentionally and mindfully. Google is always ready to provide an idea for a home-cooked meal with the ingredients you have
Compost!! By putting our natural waste into a system that allows it to break down properly and not just get added to landfills, we can self-sustain so much of our environment. Here are some resources to get started:
